About me
Emma Roll was born in Calgary, Alberta and moved to B.C in her early childhood, where she lived with her mother, father, and two siblings. Emma has lived on Vancouver Island for most of her life. She now resides in North Vancouver. Emma is an 18-year-old bachelor’s student. She is currently in her first year of the Motion Picture Arts program at Capilano University.
Emma’s love for film started at a very early age, watching movies with her family. Her family bonded and showed love through movies. She loved to connect with those on the screen and try and see herself within them. She would analyze the choices that were made and how those things were possible. Throughout Emma’s life, she has always been drawn to the creative field. She feels that she learns best through hands-on experience rather than verbal instructions. That played a big part in her creative growth. Throughout her teenage years, she explored drawing and painting. Having her art displayed in shows at cafes and galleries, as well as using profits from her art to fundraise for the local homeless community. Towards the end of high school, she started to develop an interest in photography. From there, she developed the idea of becoming a filmmaker.
Emma feels that one of her biggest accomplishments so far is getting into the Motion Picture Arts Program. Emma suffered with poor mental health throughout most of high school and is still navigating those struggles. This did make the idea of university at the time quite out of reach. Now that she is here, Emma uses those struggles to allow for a different perspective when writing or creating films.
Through the next four years of Emma’s degree, she hopes to further her understanding of the film industry and the role each person plays. She will continue to explore directing, producing, lighting and grip, set production, post-production, cinematography, and more. She hopes to further understand herself and discover what her place is in the industry and on set. Emma has spent the last two years of her life working on creative photoshoots, building her portfolio, and working on short films.
Emma is taking the opportunity to volunteer and work on film sets this coming summer. She is extremely grateful for the opportunity and is excited to see where this will take her. She looks forward to having a long and happy career in the film industry.
